Brittany Murphy, Google Results and the Live Web

Waking up this morning I heard the news about Brittany Murphy’s passing so I went and “googled” it and sure enough the search confirmed the story. But as I scanned through the numerous results I saw a new window embedded in the page I had not noticed before which was continuously scrolling with updates. The Brittany Murphy story was breaking before my eyes via a “dynamic stream” of real-time content from such sites as Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku, Identi.ca and of course Twitter. It’s “Free” when Irony becomes Plagiarism…

I started to write this entry only because I had heard that Chris Anderson, editor in chief of Wired magazine and author of the 2006 bestseller “The Long Tail”, had not only released a new book called “Free” but had released it on Scribd.com for free so we could all read it. To my shock and horror I was told by Scribd.com that in fact “Free” was not – well, not in Australia anyway because “…this content is geographically restricted” and “Due to our agreements with our publishing partners, the document you requested is only available to users located in the United States.” [...]
