Just got home from the Grand Sumo Championships to see the news on NHK that the Japan Meteorological Agency has a Typhoon warning that includes strong winds, heavy rains and tidal waves. Typhoon “Ma-On” is likely to make landfall on Wakayama Prefecture (Honshu Island) early tomorrow (July 20th), with power cuts, telecommunication [...]  While Kyoto can get pretty hot right now, the humidity is actually the killer. This is where the Tenugui, or the Japanese Handkerchief, comes in handy. Tenugui means ‘the thing to wipe hand’, and while it can be used for discreetly mopping sweaty brows, the main use of this small flannel is as [...] Yesterday we did some shopping in at Isetan in Kyoto. Among other things, we brought some tomatoes… Just to give you some perspective, the tomatoes in the bags on the lower right hand side are about 12 cm in diameter… Yes…12cm…at least in diameter. At 398 yen [Currently AUD$4.75] per bag that’s may seem like a fair whack per tomato…but [...] Wow….been in Kyoto now for 36 hours and time is flying past…. One thing we thought we should do is organise some more video’s that are in “engrish” so we can watch something at night – not that Japanese TV is lame…nor the Japanese winning the women world cup being replayed time after time on TV [...] |
