A light (aircraft) story to finish the week…

ludmilla-plane-crash-006News is the City has just reported what they describe as “another of those ‘you couldn’t make it up’ stories.”

Picture this…Marcus Schrenker is a 38-year-old Indiana money manager who was very much concerned about the wrath of clients who were angry at losing out on annuity investments made with him as well as his sorry marriage that looked like ending in divorce.

In such circumstances what can a Money Manager do? How about fake your own death in order to escape…he’s a smart guy…if you plan it right you can pull it off…can’t you?

Schrenker took the skies in his single-engine Piper Malibu plane on January 11th this year and during the flight radioed air-controllers that his windscreen had shattered, and that he had been badly cut by the glass. He then engaged the autopilot, pointed the plane towards the Gulf of Mexico, and parachuted out to safety allowing the plane to run out of fuel and crash. While the plane was flying without a pilot he was headed off to Florida on a motorcycle he had stashed away for that purpose.

What he didn’t count on was the two F-15 jets which managed to catch up with the plane to offer assistance and noticed that no-one was aboard.

The authorities turned up the next day at a Florida campsite and arrested Schrenker. See, he had left a book of campsites in the cockpit and when the authorities recovered the wreckage they found the book with pages detailing sites in Florida ripped out!

So…in addition to angry investors, the associated charges related to his alleged financial shenanigans, and a more than likely divorce (especially now) Schrenker is also looking at 26 years in prison and a $500,000 fine for his aeronautical exploits. He will also have to reimburse Federal authorities at least $38,000 for the cost of the fly-by farce.

See…your week wasn’t so bad after all J
